In most shipments, items on a pallet are defined as 500 kg per cubic meter (CBM) for cost charging and calculation. However, there are often shipments of goods or items that can go over 500 kg per cubic meter. For example, dense goods like metal products (steel bars), machinery, cement, marble slabs, and certain chemicals can easily exceed 500 kg in just 1 CBM.
Here’s how it works:
For sea freights, 1 cubic meter can hold a maximum of 500kg. If your item exceeds that, the logistics company or agent will charge you an overweight fee. It may be 1 cubic meter of goods, but it can give you extra charges rather than the standard charge due to the weight.
For instance:
- Cubic Volume = 1 CBM
- Weight = 750 kg
Calculation of Overweight Fee:
750 kg / 500 kg = 1.5 CBM
So, the final charge will be calculated based on 1.5 CBM instead of the original 1 CBM. This can significantly increase your shipping cost if you’re transporting heavy goods. Typically, when importing from China to Malaysia, the cost for 1 CBM is a few hundred Ringgit Malaysia. While heavy items might result in higher charges, these fees are appropriate due to the careful weight allocation required for containers loaded onto the vessel. Weight distribution is crucial for ensuring safe and efficient sea shipping!
